Given the desert conditions of Mendoza, what factors allow for viticulture?
The lack of rain is problematic and makes dry farming next to impossible. Cuyo, on average, receives 231 mm of rain a year. For reference, vines require 500 mm a year to survive. They are able to create viable conditions with the “dripping” water from melted snow that comes down from the snow capped Andes. The summers are hot, but not too hot for the grapes. The vines are planted on high elevation sites that decrease in temperature with altitude. The solar radiation permeates the soil and the vines react by growing grapes with thicker skins. Kind of like its own self-preserving sunscreen.
