Hosea
Theme: Faithfulness When: 8th century BC, before the fall of Israel in 722 BC Hosea prophesies to the northern kingdom and uses his own broken marriage as a picture of Israel’s unfaithfulness to the Lord. But the great note of the book is that God’s covenant love is stronger than His people’s wandering.
Joel
Theme: Outpouring When: Date debated; often placed either early or after the exile Joel uses a locust plague to wake the people up to the coming Day of the Lord. He calls for repentance and points forward to the day when God will pour out His Spirit on His people.
Amos
Theme: Justice When: Mid-8th century BC, during Israel’s prosperity under Jeroboam II Amos speaks into a time of outward success and inward corruption. He condemns empty religion, oppression of the poor, and false confidence, showing that true worship must be joined to righteousness.
Obadiah
Theme: Pride When: Likely around or just after Jerusalem’s fall in 586 BC Obadiah is a judgment against Edom for gloating over Judah’s destruction and acting violently toward her. The message is simple and sharp: proud nations will fall, and the kingdom belongs to the Lord.
Jonah
Theme: Mercy When: 8th century BC, during the Assyrian era Jonah is sent to Nineveh, Israel’s enemy, and resists the mercy of God. The book exposes the narrowness of the prophet’s heart while displaying the surprising wideness of God’s compassion.
Micah
Theme: Righteousness When: Late 8th century BC, during the days of Isaiah Micah confronts corrupt leaders, false prophets, and injustice in both Israel and Judah. Yet he also gives rich hope, including the promise that the coming ruler would come from Bethlehem.
Nahum
Theme: Vengeance When: 7th century BC, before Nineveh’s fall in 612 BC Nahum announces the downfall of Nineveh and the judgment of Assyria. If Jonah shows that God is merciful, Nahum shows that His patience does not mean He ignores evil forever.
Habakkuk
Theme: Trust When: Late 7th century BC, as Babylon rises Habakkuk wrestles openly with God about evil, injustice, and the coming Babylonian invasion. The book moves from confusion to worship and anchors itself in the truth that the righteous shall live by faith.
Zephaniah
Theme: Day When: Late 7th century BC, in the days of Josiah Zephaniah warns of the coming Day of the Lord against Judah and the nations. But he also ends with tender restoration, showing the Lord rejoicing over His redeemed people.
Haggai
Theme: Priority When: 520 BC, after the exile Haggai speaks to returned exiles who have neglected the rebuilding of the temple. He calls them to put God first and stop treating His worship as secondary to their own comfort.
Zechariah
Theme: Hope When: Beginning around 520 BC, after the exile Zechariah encourages the post-exilic community through visions, promises, and messianic hope. He points again and again to the coming King, the cleansing of God’s people, and the certainty of God’s future.
Malachi
Theme: Preparation When: 5th century BC, after the temple had been rebuilt Malachi addresses spiritual apathy, corrupt priests, careless worship, and covenant unfaithfulness. He closes the Old Testament by pointing messenger and the coming of the Lord.
