A

“Death to Moby Dick!”

24
Q

What does Ishmael fear and admire about the whale?

A

(For Moby-Dick) He fears the whiteness of the whale. He admires its tail, the spout, and its wide ‘forehead’ due to its wisdom.

25
Who is Fedallah and how do the crew view him?
Ahab's personal stowaway harpooner of Persian descent. He also serves as a prophet, predicting parts of the future. Some of the crew view him as a dark spirit
26
The Albatross
The first ship the Pequod encounters, the ship is bleached white and the crew is silent.
27
Town-Ho ship
Sailor and first mate fought, both were placed in holding. The crew spot Moby-Dick and the first mate is eaten
28
Jeroboam
Named after Biblical king. One sailor, Gabriel, warns the Pequod not to try and kill Moby-Dick because he is a reincarnated shaker God.
29
The Virgin
Never caught a whale before, the Pequod make fun of them for trying to hunt a fin whale (notoriously fast). The Pequod catch more whales than them.
30
Samuel Enderby
The captain, Boomer, also has a peg limb because of Moby-Dick. But unlike Ahab, he harbors no resentment towards the whale
31
Bachelor
Nantucket whaling ship that was successful. The crew is dancing and celebrating, the captain does not believe in Moby-Dick
32
Rose-Bud
French ship. Caught 2 whales (stinks, verbal irony). Stubb takes their ambergris during a gam by convincing the captain (who cannot speak English well enough) that the whale with ambergris is plagued
33
The Rachel
Biblical name; Rachel lost her children in the desert. The captain asks Ahab for help looking for his son, but Ahab decides not to
34
What is ambergris?
Soap-like substance found in the bowels of ill whales that can be used in cosmetic products. Extremely valuable and expensive
35
Delight
Final ship, lost 5 of their men (name is ironic). The Delight's men think it is odd the Pequod uses a coffin as a life buoy
36
What happens in Chapter 110, 'Queequeg in his Coffin'?
Queequeg grows ill and believes he will die. The carpenter makes a canoe-like coffin for him, covered in Queequeg's symbols. But Queequeg does not find a sea burial appealing. He heals and the coffin is used as a life buoy
37
What does Starbuck consider doing to Ahab?
He considers shooting him with a musket outside of Ahab's cabin to save the rest of the crew. He decides not to because he feels guilt about shooting a man in his sleep
38
Summarize the Pequod's pursue of Moby-Dick in the final chapters
Fedallah is crushed against Moby-Dick's side. A storm brews overhead as the days pass. Moby-Dick breaks Ahab's whaling boat in half. The second day, Ahab loses his harpoon when meeting Moby-Dick. Starbuck loses all hope for the crew. On the third day, Moby-Dick breaks all the whaling boats and rams into the side of the Pequod. The ship is shattered and slowly begins to sink with Tashtego at the top. Ahab is caught between the line of the ship, and hung/drowned to death.
39
Describe the ending/epilogue of Moby-Dick
Ishmael floats on Queequeg's coffin, using it as a life buoy. The sinking Pequod ship creates a whirlpool and everyone is swallowed up. The Rachel sails by and rescues Ishmael
40

Fedallah; he says "only hemp can kill thee" to Ahab.
