Q

What is a controlled evacuation?

A

It is an evacuation whereby the train cannot get to a safe location. It has to be authorised by Control (potentially via the signaller).
It requires a Line Block and Emergency Switch Off
It also relies on information (where passengers will be evacuated to, who is helping), and additional staff (eg MOM, any Competent members of staff who may be working or passing)

27
During single line working, how must you approach points?
Approach at caution and make sure the points are set correctly Not exceed 15mph
28
What will happen to the level crossing when you cross the first treadle?
The first treadle activates both the amber road traffic lights and the siren for motorists
29
What will happen when you pass the second treadle?
The second treadle the red lights for motorists start to flash, and the crossing barriers lower
30
What happens when you pass over the third treadle?
All road traffic signs extinguish and the barriers raise
31
What term do you report to the signaller to confirm that the trains inspection of the track has completed?
Train has arrived complete
32
If you are asked to inspect the line in a tunnel, what must you check with the signaller?
If they require you to use the signal post telephone instead of the GSM-R (This is an old rule, due to the reliability of older CSR radios)
33
How will a crossing attendant signal the signal is clear to cross?
With a green flag
34
What additional steps do you have to undertake when the signaller instructs you to pass a signal at danger at the entrance to a tunnel?

35
Following passing a signal at danger in a tunnel, what must you do?
Bring your train to a stand at the first signal (irrespective of the signal displayed) and inform them that the train has arrived complete.
36
When might a signaller give permission to pass a signal at danger?
Defective equipment - the signal cannot be cleared Movements (an example would be shunting) Engineering - an engineering train is moved towards a possession OR to leave a line at an intermediate point Checking Clearing the line (assist a failed train, evacuate passengers from a failed train, remove portion of a divided train, remove a train that has proceeded without authority) Pilot working
37
What is extended block working?
If two or more consecutive signals are not functioning or have been disconnected for a specific reason then extended block working is introduced to allow trains to pass through the section in the most efficient way.

44
When you are at the signal at the end of extended block working, what do you need to inform the signaller?
“Train has arrived complete”
45
Who might assist you at a level crossing, and what flags might they display?
A crossing attendant. They can display a green flag to indicate that the crossing is clear, or a red flag to indicate the crossing is not clear and you must stop. Their signal does not take priority over any working signals.
46
How would you know that degraded working has ended?
There will be an End of degraded working signals. This must be there. The only scenarios that the sign might not be in place is if the degraded working is last minute and the sign has not yet been put in place.
47
**Single line working** How would you identify a pilot?
They will be wearing a red armband on their left arm, with the word ‘PILOT’ in white
48
**Single line working** What is the principle of single line working?
when one line of a double line becomes blocked, single line working by pilot allows trains to travel over the line in either direction
49
**Single line working** Where will you find out about single line working ?
If planned it may be published in the WON. Details may be in the late notice case or the new notice case. When you arrive at the start and a pilot notifies you
50
**Single line working** What form would a pilot complete?

They are appointed to take charge of single line working.
53
**Single line working** If you are the first train travelling into single line working and the pilot is travelling with you, when must you stop?
When the pilot is to tell anyone working on or near the line that single line working is in place. When the pilot is to tell the crossing keeper that single line working is in place So that the pilot can check that points are properly secured.
54
**Single line working** If you are the first train travelling into single line working and the pilot is NOT travelling with you, when must you stop?
To inform any workers on or near the line that single line working is occurring, and which line is being used.
55
Can a green hand signal be used to give a driver authority to pass a signal at danger?
No, it is used only to indicate that it is safe to proceed across a level crossing or unworked points during single line working.
56
What will a hand signaller use alongside a red signal?
One detonator. This will be remove before they display a yellow hand signal.
57
**Single line working** When travelling in the wrong direction, what is the maximum speed limit?
50mph
58
**Single line working** if you are driving the first train, what is the maximum speed you can travel over any points?

60
**Single line working** When might you see a hand signaller?
when the signal section is longer, a hand signaller may be used to move a train back onto the obstructed line/into sidings etc. in order to clear the line for an oncoming train. A hand signaller is also placed at an intermediate signal box providing it is open.
61
**Single line working** If there is no hand signaller at an intermediate signal box, how would you approach it?
approach at caution, and only proceed if it safe to do so
62
**Single line working** When might you see a green/red flag on the ground?
At unworked points. The green section will either be on the left or the right. The side that the green is on indicates the route that the points are set for.
63
**Single line working** If working to the point of obstruction, what is different about the pilot?
There must be a pilot in both sides of the obstruction, and they will ALWAYS travel with the train. The RT3193 is not required.
64
**Single line working** What will accompany an end of degraded working sign?
A signallers agent
65
**Single line working** If provided, where will the end of degraded working sign and signallers agent be positioned?
opposite the signal on the proper line that you will be returning to.
66
**Single line working** What if there is no end of degraded working sign/ signallers agent, or there is no main aspect?
The pilot MUST travel with the train
67
Who would authorise a controlled evacuation?
Control
68
How would a driver be communicating durning the whole process of a controlled evacuation?
They will be using the GSM-R to communicate with control. They will be relaying all important information to staff assisting, and relaying information to passengers frequently.

72
What should you request when examining the line in a tunnel?
For a competent person on the train to join you in the drivers cab and assist you
73
If examining the line in poor visibility, what must you have?
Working lights. If they are not working, then a portable headlight is sufficient.
74
If examining the line in poor visibility and you have NO lights, what may happen?
you may be asked to examine the line on foot
75
What is route proving?
It is a procedure carried out to ensure that the railway is safe for trains to operate. It is typically carried out after extreme weather
76
Why might a driver be asked to route prove?
After high winds or heavy rain, checking for obstructions and debris, flooding or structural failure
77
Why might you be asked to pass a signal at danger?
The signal is defective. Remove a train that has entered a section without authority Remove a portion of a divided train Assist a failed train Evacuate passengers from a failed train Examining the line
78
What speed when route proving?
Proceed at caution (taking conditions into account, allowing you to stop the train short of any train, vehicle or obstruction)

Where would this sign be located?
At/before/after an easily identifiable place: A station A junction A level crossing A tunnel
87
What is this form? When would you find it? When would it be used?
It's the RT3156 **Single line working** ticket. Its issued by the pilot to drivers and records the details for the working of trains over a **single** or bi-directional line by pilot, during a failure or when working to and from a point of obstruction.
88
The pilot is travelling with you during single line working, and you are the first train. When would you need to stop?
When the pilot needs to inform anyone on or near the line that single line working is in place. When the pilot needs to inform the crossing keeper that single line working is in place. When the pilot is checking that points have been set correctly and they are secure.
89
When would the pilot need to travel during single line working regarding returning to the proper line?
No main aspect (the line is not bi-directional) No GPS light along with end of degraded working sign and pilot. Poor visibility. Up to and back from the point of an obstruction
90
What is the purpose of the signallers agent?
They are there to report back to the signaller if the driver hasn't contacted the signaller to state that 'the train has arrived complete'
91
What would you do if you identified a main aspect, GPS light or Limit of shunt during your wrong directional movement that was not included on the brief from the pilot?
Stop, do not pass it, contact the signaller.
92
What is the maximum speed during single line working in the normal direction?
Linespeed
93
How can a movement be controlled over a level crossing for SLW movements?
A crossing attendant MAY be assigned. they will have a green flag indicating that the crossing is clear, or a red flag indicating the crossing is NOT clear. They do not work in conjunction with a main signalling aspect

What form is this?
RT3193 Drivers single line working ticket
95
What form is used in modified working?
RT3177
96
What is the maximum speed in modified working?
50mph
97
What is modified working?
It allows trains to enter a section with a faulty starter signal on a single line section, before a pilot is in place. It is only possible because of infrastructure and technological updates in place at that section called a direction of flow indicator
98
When conducting another driver, what do you need to inform them of before any movement?
How to stop the train in an emergency. Where the emergency equipment is. How to shut down the train in an emergency.
99
Is a pilot required when modified working (single line) is in operation?
No. If a pilot was available, modified working would not be in use, but instead Single line working by pilot.
100
What must the driver do at the end of modified working?
Report to the signaller 'train has arrived complete' - this is because the pilot is not in place to report to the signaller themself.
101
When would single line working by pilot be introduced?
When the entrance signal to a single line has failed and can't be cleared. When the 'token' has been lost. When train s have to work to and from the point of an obstruction
