Gregor mendel
Mendel’s First Law
The law of segregation:
- diploid organism genes has two alleles - one from each parent
- probability of haploid gamete receiving one allele of a gene = similar probability to flipping a coin
Pedigree analysis
the study of an inherited trait in a group of related individuals to determine the pattern & characteristics of the trait
Autosomal recessive inheritance
Cystic fibrosis
a rare inherited disorder resulting in respiratory & digestive problems
- over accumulation of sticky mucus
- results from mutations in the CFTR gene
- autosomal recessive
- probability = 0.25
Autosomal dominant inheritance
inheritance of one allele is sufficient to cause the trait or disease = dominant allele
- eg. huntingtons disease
