Q

List and describe three change strategies for safety practice.

A
  1. Effective communication.
making presentations and conducting safety-related training.
attending management meetings, and ensuring safety issues are included on the agenda and recorded in meeting minutes.
circulating minutes from meetings where OH&S issues are presented such as safety committees, team meetings, and meetings with regulators.
posting safety promotion materials that communicate the desired safety message.
  2. Building a business case.
You can use a business case to introduce change and manage cost. Many safety business cases are based on regulatory compliance and the consequences of not complying. There are also times where a number of options exist to control risk and exposure factors. You can cost each of the options out and present them to the senior executive for a final decision.
  3. Finding allies.
Use your allies to help you communicate safety messages. Often, these allies are stakeholders who share goals with the safety management system (discussed in more detail later).

These strategies help in managing safety practices and communicating safety messages effectively.

Q

What is the 3 main steps for promoting safety?

A
  1. setting goals.
Safety promotion is usually successful when measurable and realistic goals are set. These goals have the most impact when they are developed by stakeholders themselves. A strong leader identifies and includes all of these stakeholders in the goal-setting process.
  2. implementing action plans.
Once safety goals have been set, you need to develop mechanisms to achieve them. As a strong leader, you may want to guide this process. Stakeholders should also be involved in this step. Petersen (1996) suggests that OH&S practitioners should engage a champion at the upper management level to help implement safety objectives:.
  3. measuring and tracking goals –.

To track your progress, you can communicate key milestone accomplishments, celebrate successes, and share in failures with stakeholders.

Safety promotion is successful when measurable and realistic goals are developed by stakeholders.

Q

What is an example of visible leadership?

A

Visible leadership is often described as Leaders not only “talking the talk,” but also by “walking the walk.” Give an example of visible leadership from your experiences and describe why “visible eadership” is important for OH&S.

Example of visible leadership: CEO walks the shop floor, sincerely interested in the work being done (eg. taking time to watch, ask questions, listen to what staff have to say, act on the feedback/communicate back). While conducting this walk through the CEO wears all the proper protective equipment required in the work space.

Visible leadership is important for OH&S as it demonstrates commitment and encourages safety practices.
