A

Identifies a closed lane in which people, stopped vehicles or other hazards are present
Must follow the instructions on signs in advance of a closed lane to move safely to an open lane
Must not drive in closed lanes. WHen lane no longer closed a sign will show a speed limit or the word ‘end’

A

Give priority to traffic already on the motorway
Check traffic to match speed and fit safely into the traffic flow in the left hand lane
Not corss solid white lines that seperate lanes or use the hard shoulder
Stay on slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
Remain in the left hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking

Service areas are located along motorways to allow you to take breaks and refreshment and rest facilities on the local road netweoks may also be accessable from motorway exits

What is an overview of lane discipline on motorways?

A

If you are overtaking, you should return to the left when it is safe to do so
Emergency services, traffic offivers, recovery workers and other people or vehicles stopped on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area. If you are driving on the left hand lane, if safe to do so, should move into adjacent lane to create more space between your vehicle and people and stopped card

A

A goods vehicle maxium laden weight over 7.5 tonnes. If max is under 7.5 tonnes but above 3.5 tonnes and has a speed limiter fitted
A passenger vehicle maxium laden weight over 7.5 tonnes and was made or adapted to fit more than 8 passenger plus driver. If max is under 7.5 tonnes and was made or constructed to fit 8 seated passenger and has a speed limiter fitted

What do you need to do when approaching a junction on a motorway?

A

Look well ahead for signals signs and road marking
Direction signs may be placed over the road
Change lanes well ahead of junction
Only get in that lane if you wish to go in the direction indicated by signs or road markings

How do you overtake on a motorway?

A

Check your mirrors
Take time to judge the speeds correctly
Make sure the lane behind you will be joining is suffiently clear behind or ahead
Take quick sideway glances into the blind spot area to verify position of vehicle that may have disappeared from your view in the mirror

What do you need to be careful of when overtaking on a motorway?

A

Traffic maybe coming up behind you very quickily
Check all mirrors carefully
Look out for motorcyclists
Signal in plenty of time and then move out
Do not cut in on vehicle you have overtaken
Be especially careful at night and in poor visibilty as it is harder to judge speed and distance

A

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lnae on your left to overtake
Traffic in left hand lane may sometimes be moving faster than taffic to the right, you may stay in left even if it means passing traffic on right
Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake

What is an overview of the hard shoulder when present?

A

Must not use a hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by police, traffic officers or a traffic sign

What is an overview of the hard shoulder when used as an extra lane?

A

The hard shoulder can be used as an extra lane on some motorways during period of congestion
A red ‘X’ or a blank sign above hard shoulder means that you must not use the hard shoulder excpet in an emergency

A

Only use the hard shoulder as an extra lane when a speed limit is ahown above the hard shoulder
If hard shoulder is being used an extra lane, then an alternate emergency area will be provided

What is an overview of the emergency area?
Located along motorways with no hard shoulder or where the hard shoulder can be used as an extra lane Must only be used in an emergency They are marked by blue signs with an orange SOS telephone symbol and may have orange surfacing

What is an overview of stopping on a motorway?
Must not stop on any carriageway, emergency area, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge exept in an emergency or when told to do so by the police, taffic officers, an emergency sign or by red flashing ligh symbols

What is an overview of pedestrian pick up/off on motorways?
Must not pick up or set down anyone, or walk on a motorway, except in an emergency

How do you normally leave a motorway?
Unless signs indicate that a lane leads directly off the motorway, you will normally leave the motorway by a slip road on your left

What should you do when leaving a motorway?
Watch for the signs letting you know you are getting near your exit Move on to the left hand lane well before reaching your exit Signal left in good time and reduce your speed on the slip road as necesary

What is an overview of link roads between motorways?
On leaving motorway or using a link road between motorways, your speed may be higher than you realise (50 mph may feel like 30 mph) Check your speedometer and adjust your speed accordingly Some slip roads and link roads have sharp bends, so you will need to slow down
