What is and what causes a positive Trendelenburg sign?
Patient stands unassisted on each leg in turn. In positive sign, pelvic drop occurs on unsupported leg. E.g. if left gluteal muscle is weak, right side of pelvis will drop when patient stands on only left leg. Caused by superior gluteal nerve damage so its muscles are paralysed- pelvis becomes unsteady.
