nervous system Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

role of nervous system

A

-allow organisms to detect changes in the environment and respond to it
-allow organisms to process sensory information
-sends nerve impulses to effector cells

Q

what is a synapse

A

-junction between two neurones, or motor neurone and effector, nerve impulses jump from axon to dendron across synapse by neurotransmitters
-neurotransmitters secreted by presynaptic cell crosses the synaptic cleft and then binds to the specific receptors on the surface of the receiving cell

Q

stimulus and response when cat purrs

A

-touch receptors in the leg are stimulated, transmit nerve impulses via the sensory neurones to the grey matter in the spinal chord
-relay neurones transmit nerve impulses to the brain where u can feel ur leg being touched
-brain transmit nerve impulses via the relay neurone to the motor neurone, where motor neurone transmit nerve impulses to the effectors which causes u to pat the cat

Q

what happens when u touch a hot object

A

-heat stimulates the receptors in the skin which produce nerve impulses that travel through sensory neurones to spinal chord
-nerve impulses are transmitted across synapse from sensory to relay neurone, and then across another synapse to the motor neurone, at the same time, nerve impulses are transmitted to the brain
-upon receiving nerve impulses from relay neurone, motor neurone transmit nerve impulses to the effector muscles causing them to contract and withdraw hand
