What is the main job of the nervous system?
To send and receive messages between the brain and the body so we can move, think, feel, and react.
What is the basic unit of the nervous system?
The neuron.
What does a neuron do?
It carries electrical messages (nerve impulses) through the body.
What are the 3 main types of neurons?
Sensory, motor, and interneurons.
What are the 3 main parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, cell body (soma), and axon.
What is a synapse?
The tiny gap between two neurons where neurotransmitters carry messages.
What are neurotransmitters?
Chemical messengers that send signals across synapses between neurons.
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) include?
The brain and the spinal cord.
What is the function of the CNS?
It controls and coordinates all body activities; it’s the body’s control center.
What does the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) include?
All the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord.
What does the PNS do?
It connects the CNS to the rest of the body; carries information to and from the brain.
What are the two main divisions of the PNS?
The sensory division and the motor division.
What does the sensory division do?
Carries information from sense organs to the CNS.
What does the motor division do?
Sends commands from the CNS to muscles and glands.
What is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?
The part of the PNS that controls involuntary actions like heartbeat and digestion.
What are the two parts of the ANS?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Prepares the body for action — ‘fight or flight’.
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Calms the body and restores it to normal — ‘rest and digest’.
What is the function of the senses?
To detect information from the environment and send it to the brain.
What are the five senses?
Sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
What organ controls sight?
The eyes.
What cells in the eye help us see?
Rods (dim light) and cones (color).
What organ controls hearing and balance?
The ears.
How does the ear detect sound?
It senses vibrations, frequency (pitch), and amplitude (loudness).
