What are neurons?
Nerve cells that process and transmits messages through electrical signals and chemical messengers (e.g.neurotransmitters).
What are the three types of neurons?
Sensory neurons
Relay neurons
Motor neurons
What is the function of a sensory neuron?
They carry messages from PNS to CNS.
What is the function of relay neurons?
They connect sensory neurons to motor or other relay neurons.
What is the function of motor neurons?
They connect CNS to effectors such as muscles and glands.
STRUCTURE OF A NEURON
What does dendrites do?
Carry nerve impulses from neighbouring neurons towards cell body.
STRUCTURE OF A NEURON
What is the function of an axon?
Carries impulses away from cell body, down the length of the neuoron
ELECTRICAL TRANSMISSION
What is the charge inside the neuron cell when it is at resting state?
negative
ELECTRICAL TRANSMISSION
What happens when the neuron is activated by a stimulus?
Neuron becomes positively charged, causing an action potential to occur.
