Consequentialist

A

An action or rule is right or good insofar as it produces or leads to the maximization of ‘good’ consequences.
Right or wrong is determined by consequences of the act - the ends justify the means.
Consider consequences before acting.

A

Consequences that provide the greatest good for the most people
Ex: community fluoridation

Nonconsequentialist aka deontolgical ethics

A

DUTY
You are motivated by duty, motivation matters most, consequences are out of our control 9they take care of themselves when we do our duty)
Focuses more on actions than consequences
An action is right when it conforms to a judgment or rule of conduct meets the requirement of some overriding duty.
Some actions are required just because they are ‘right’ regardless of teh consequences.
All duties are derived from laws, many of which are moral laws

Virtue ethics

A

Character or virtue, and the goodness of the person living a good life, is teh cause of action.
Virtue ethics works with ‘character’ and gives trust that
Focuses on personal traits or teh example/traits/character of another person and their moral guide.
