Q

Do EM waves need a medium to travel in?

Q

Microwaves and food?

A

Microwaves are absorbed by food which contain water molecules. Microwaves are reflected from metals.

18
Q

Why are radio waves used to transmit radio and terrestrail TV signals?

A

Radio waves are used because they can travel long distances before being absorbed e.g. by buildings or trees.

19
Q

What can longer wavelength radio waves also do?

A

Longer wavelength radio waves can also spread out between hills (diffraction).

20
Q

What is another special thing about radio waves?

A

Radio waves can also reflect off a layer of charged particles in the atmosphere (ionosphere)

21
Q

Why are microwaves used to heat food?

A

Microwaves are used to heating food - because most foods contain a lot of water molecules
- water molecules absorb the energy of microwaves
The energy causes the temperature of the food to increase

22
Q

What are 2 main uses of microwaves?

A

Heating food
Communicate with satellites

23
Q

Why are microwaves used to communicate with satellites?

A

Microwaves are used to communicate with satellites in space. Because microwaves can pass through the earth’s atmosphere without being reflected or refracted.

24
Q

What is infrared and why is it used?

A

Infrared is emitted by electrical heaters and also is used to cook food in ovens. Because the energy of the infrared is easily absorbed by the surface of objects.

25
What are the 2 main uses of infrared?
1) Infrared cameras to check buildings for heat loss etc 2) Heating a room
26
What is an example of infrared being easily abosorbed?
Infrared from a heater is absorbed by objects in the room - making the room warmer.
27
What is an most important use wthi visble light?
Communication using fibre optics
28
What are firbre optics?
Fibre optics are very thin strands of glass
29
Wgat are optical fibres used for?
Optical fibres are used to carry telephone and cable TV signals
30
What can we do with optical fibres?
We can transmit pulses of light down these fibres and use these pulses to carry information.
31
Why and how can visible light carry information?
Because visble light has a short wavelength it can carry a great deal of information (ALOT!)
32
33
What are 2 uses of ultraviolet light?
Energy efficient light bulbs Tanning beds (sun tanning)
34
How is ultraviolet light mire efficient than visble light in lightbulbs?
Because UV has a shorter wavelength it carries mire energy than visible light
35
How does UV light work in an energy efficient light bulb?
The energy of UV is absorbed by the internal surface of the bulb and it is converted to visible light. Requiring much less energy than a normal light bulb.
36
What does UV light increase the risk of?
Ultraviolet increases the risk if skin cancer and causes premature skin ageing.
37
What are the 2 types of waves used in medical imaging?
X-rays & Gamma rays
38
What does x-rays and gamma rays being very penetrative mean?
X-rays and gamma rays being penetrative means that they can pass easily through body tissue.
39
What can x-rays be used for medically?
X-rays can be used to visualise broken bones
40
What can gamma rays be used for medically?
Gamma rays are used to detect cancers
41
Why are we able to see bones when using x-ray?
X-rays are absorbed by bones which is why we can see them in x-ray images.
42
What can both x-ray and gamma rays be used for medically?
Both x-rays and gamma rays can be used in medical treatment e.g. to treat cancer
43
What is an example of medical treatment using x-rays or gamma rays?
Treating cancer
