- only use 0.9% normal saline
- only transfuse for 4 hours
- do not hang for more than 4 hours
- only use blood tubing with filter

What needs to be done before administering blood?
A
- confirm orders
- confirm consent
- assess labs
- 2 nurses, 2 pt identifiers, 2 blood checks
- explain procedure
- obtain transfusion history, and allergies
- has the pt had a transfusion reaction in the past
- initiate transfusion within 30 minutes of release from blood bank
- assess bag
- take vitals
