Inquiry question
To what extent is the coastal management at Bexhill effective?
Aim of the investigation
To determine the effectiveness of different types of coastal management to build beaches and prevent erosion.
Geographical theory
What concepts/prior knowledge will you be using?
Longshore drift occurs naturally. Prevention means installing groynes to build beach + protect area from flooding + erosion
Hypothesis
The coastal management will be effective to a very high extent, since a beach has been built by the groynes + hard and soft engineering is in place. There will be few signs of erosion, and the groynes will be more exposed on the downdrift side.
Why is this location suitable?
The topic of the enquiry - coastal engineering strategies needs beach with hard and soft eng.
Distance - closest beach to school, so max time for data collection
Accessibility - easy to reach by bus (car park) + shops for food. Safe to enter beach + collect data.
Suitability - provides necessary data (groynes, pebbles etc)
Risk assessment
Drowning (don’t touch water and check weather before going - floods). Speaking to dangerous strangers (travel in groups and have a phone, teachers at checkpoints). Wildlife (don’t bring food onto beach and be wary of seagulls). Rocky land causes injury (Wear thick, ankle supported footwear - boots). Sharp litter (watch out when placing quadrat, wear gloves).
Primary data
Field sketch, Wave frequency, Pebble analysis, Beach profiling, Groyne impact assessment
