Painting general processes
ideation and sketching, blocking in, rednering and layering, refining
ideation and sketching
Choose your subject and create a detailed sketch to plan the composition, values, and proportions. You can draw directly on the canvas or use transfer methods. - Figures posing, chambre claire: The device projected a superimposed image of the subject onto the artist’s drawing paper.
blocking in
Lay down the basic shapes and colors, often starting with the darker areas or shadows, to establish the foundation of the painting.
rendering and layering
Begin building up the painting by adding more layers of color. Work from general shapes to more specific details, adding big shapes first before moving on to smaller elements. - Thin/lean mediums to start with, linseed oil as the thinnest, build up to fatter medium
refining
Add final details, adjust colors, and make any necessary corrections to bring the painting to completion.
techniques of painting
blending, drybrush, impasto, underpainting, stippling, glazing
stippling
is when you paint tiny dots, usually in a variety of shades or colors
glazing
is a technique where you apply a thin, transparent layer of paint over a dry layer to enhance depth and luminosity.
