(8 cards)

1
Q

Q

Describe fleece rot caused by pseudomonas spp

A
  • key infection, causing discolouration and pigmentation of the fleece
  • causes dermatitis after wetting, as the aerobic environment after rain allows Pseudomonas from the skin or soil to proliferate

Q

Otitis externa in dogs Pseudomonas spp

A
  • can be a primary infection or a secondary invader after another infection
  • The presence of green pustules suggests Pseudomonas involvement
  • Other infections in dogs include cystitis, dermatitis, and prostatitis

Q

Mechanisms of intrinsic resistance of Pseudomonas spp

A
  1. Lower permeability of intrinsic resistance
    1. prevents many drugs from entering the bacterial cells
  2. Multidrug efflux pumps
    1. actively pump antimicrobials out of the cell if they do manage to enter
  3. Chromosomally produced Beta-lactamases
    1. enzymes that neutralise beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillins and cephalosporins), rendering them ineffective
