What is the difference between Raynauds disease and Raynauds phenomenon?

A

Disease = primary,
Phenomenon = secondary
Both are characterised by exaggerated vasoconstriction of the digital arteries and cutaneous arterioles to cold or emotional stress.

What are the secondary causes of Raynauds phenomenon?

A

Connective tissue disorders
Leukemia
Type 1 cryoglobulinaemia
Use of vibrating tools
Drugs - COCP, ergot
Cervical rib.

What is the recommended treatment for Raynauds?

A

If suspected secondary cause - refer to secondary care
Primary = nifedpine (CCB) or IV prostacyclin (epoprostenol) which will last weeks to months.
