Q

rules of oxidation states

A
  1. sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is 0
  2. sum of oxidation numbers in an ion is equal to the charge of the ion
  3. oxidation number of an uncombined element is 0
  4. oxidation number of oxygen is -2 except in peroxides where it’s -1
  5. oxidation number of hydrogen is +1 except in hydroxides it’s -1
  6. fluorine always -1 so in oxygen diflouride oxygen is -2

Q

steps to combining half equations

A

1.multiply half equations by a factor so number of electrons in each half equation is the same
2. add equations together then cancel out electrons
(like simultaneous equations)
