Pilot study
-a mini trial run of the study before the main study
-> helps to identify any potential issues and amend the design/procedure like question difficulty or wording
Does NOT test the hypothesis it tests the PROCEDURE
Single Blind technique
-reduces the chances of demand characteristics
-participants are NOT told certain aspects of the study like other conditions or whether their drug is placebo.
Double Blind technique
–both the researcher and participant are unaware
-used when a researcher may accidentally act different e.g happier when giving drug less happy when giving placebo (investigator effects)
-> Other assistants will help instead
Counterbalancing
-no order effects (practice/ fatigue effect) for when using repeated measures
-> both conditions of the experiment are affected so no order effects
AB or BA or ABBA
Control group/ Control condition
One of the conditions of the experiment is not exposed to the conditions we’re investigating)
e.g no music or no caffeine etc
->establishes a baseline to compare the experimental condition to
-> must still be operationalised IV
