The entire group of individuals or instances
Sample
A smaller group of selected from the population which is used to represent the larger group. Research’s study the sample and generalise the finding to the population
Random sampling
Every member of the population has an equal chance of of being selected, the researcher must use a method of random selection and enter all the names of those in the population for this.
systematic sampling
Selecting an nth member of the population. It’s different from random as it does not give an equal chance of selection to each individual in the target group.
Stratified sampling
divide the population into sub groups based on characteristics, the random sample from each sub group proportionally
Opportunity sampling
Participants who are both accessible and willing to take part are targeted
Volunteer sampling
Individuals who are self selected to be apart of the study

Generalisability
The extent to which findings and conclusions from an investigations can be broadly applied to the population so, participants need to be representative of the target population
