Aim/audience impact
-Aim = Show people being looked down upon for not using social media, especially to influence relationships.
-Audience impact = Dislike showman for viewing Woyzeck as lower down in social hierarchy due to no social media usage.
Acting techniques (Showman)
-Showman poor posture
-Showman says “Our monkey’s a soldier” = Woyzeck act as monkey, pull out sword and kneel on ground.
-Obvious he is describing Woyzeck = audience don’t have to think.
Brecht techniques
-Woyzeck in freeze frame when Sergeant says “Hold it. Look at that” until he speaks again “Marie”
-Shows Woyzeck has no power/control here
-Can see lighting designer hold a lights button on stage to control lights = reminds audience watching a play not real life.
Costume (Woyzeck)
-Full black long sleeves, trousers, and gloves
-Blends into stage/background like blends into background of society
Staging
-Use revolve stage here
-Stops turning when Woyzeck starts speaking, starts again when finished until next line
-Woyzeck stood centre stage where not spinning
Set
-Roof/point of circus tent attached to ceiling
-Minimal set that still shows its a fairground
Sound
-Every time Showman finishes a sentence in his paragraph = harsh drum beat
-Actor playing sergeant takes off jacket and has plain black top underneath, grabs a small drum
-Pretends to play it whilst singing lines said by Showman but in opposite mood.
-Becomes repetitive and annoying = not naturalistic.
Lighting
Harsh white gel light across whole stage
Props
-Sergeant holds large phone in hand pointed towards Marie
-Speaks whilst looking at phone as if doing a live on social media
Original vs modern performance and Buchner’s aim
-Original = audience laugh from finding Showman’s speech funny, don’t feel bad for Woyzeck
-Modern = may still laugh a little but will be able to identify the social critiques behind the speech
-Buchner’s aim = show how the lower classes were treated as only upper-class people would be able to go to the theatre at this time.
