Aim and audience impact
Aim = show how it is seen as fine and normal to pursue a relationship through social media created structures instead of pure love.
-Audience impact = dislike Marie for way describing Woyzeck and getting the earrings from Drum Major.
Acting techniques (Woyzeck and Marie)
-Marie sings in light opera sound which contrasts the lyrics and music playing
-Woyzeck unnatural expressions from constantly smiling, contrasts confusion and anger
-Woyzeck maintains good posture, Marie bad posture with turned in feet and neck sticking out
-Never face each other/make eye contact = disconnected
Brecht techniques
-See actor playing Woyzeck get changed on stage to remind audience watching a play (alienation effect)
-Same actor stands downstage right holding placard ‘Woyzeck sees Marie’s earrings. The earrings are from the Drum major’ = remove shock
-Does same downstage left
-See him get changed back again
Costume
Woyzeck in all black, same as previous scene
-Marie in pink dress again
-Seen as good/innocent on social media, contrasts her morals being bad
Staging
Revolve not used here
Set
-Baby’s crib upstage left
Sound
-Fast paced music with beats straight after Marie says “he’ll come and get you”.
Lighting
-Harsh white gel wash light remains
Props
-Fake plastic baby held up by Marie when singing to it
Original vs modern performance, Buchner’s aim
Original = dislike Marie for taking gift and not conforming to society
-Modern = audience dislike Marie for cheating with someone on social media
-Buchner’s aim = show unfair treatment of working class compared to upper class.
