this is how we communicate, how we express and talk to others. it embodies the way a society thinks.
affirm, and why do people affirm?
affirm means stating something as true, people affirm to identify themselves or their group because they wanna be a part of that collective and they wanna identify as that.
ex: canadian danish society, french assocation in alberta.
slang, jargon.
slang - terms within a language used by a collective. (friends, more casual.)
jargon - terms within a language used by a collective in a profession.
context
circumstances, event, idea.
coltan
drc, and coltan they killed off gorillas and fed them to the miners. harming bio diversity, animals, habitats and nature itself.
lubicon cree
the goverment basically allowed for major forest to be cut down for a paper company in the territory of the lubicon Cree, destorying their land.
and still today the gov doesn’t recognize them as an actual indigenous group.
how is trade a globalizing force?
it increases interconnectedness with other countires because we directly interact with them.
trade is two parties exchanging goods or services.
how is transportation a globalizing force?
they increase efficiency on trade.
how is communication a globalizing force?
helps us connect with others, through interconnectedness. As well as being able to communicate with others.
media as a globalizing force
helps us learn about news in other countries, but because of media concentration and media convergence its making challenges.
banana wars
Economic:
Bananas remain cheap due to economies of scale, control of distribution, and low wages.
Ecuador: major exporter, low pay, ignored labour laws, child workers.
Political:
EU gave tariff advantages to ex-colonies → U.S. & Chiquita protested → WTO dispute.
Environmental/Social:
Monoculture crops, deforestation, pesticide use.
Workers face unsafe conditions, low pay, displacement of Indigenous peoples.
assimilation, accommodation, cultural homegenization, and acculturation.
Homogenization: Global culture reduces diversity.
Acculturation: Minority adapts but retains elements of its culture.
Accommodation: Cultures create space for each other.
Assimilation: Minority absorbed by majority.
