Specialised cells Flashcards

1
Q

How are palisade leaf cells specialised for their function?

A

palisade mesophyll-Closely packed together, forming continuous layers in leaf.
High numbers of chloroplasts absorb in large amounts of light for photosynthesis.
Cell wall made of cellulose.
Large vacuole to maintain turgor pressure

Q

How are root hair cells specialised for their function?

A

Increase surface area -maximise movement of water and minerals from soils into plant roots.
Thin, cellulose wall, and a vacuole containing cell sap with low water potential. This encourages movement of water into cells.

Q

How is the xylem and phloem specialised for its function?

A

Vascular bundles in plant stems enclose strands of vascular tissue, containing xylem and phloem vessels. These vessels distribute water plus organic substances around the plant and serve as structural support.

Q

How is the sperm specialised for its function?

A

Tail like structure called undulipodium to move
Many mitochondria.
Acrosome in head contains enzymes to digest protective layer of egg.
Contains haploid nucleus

Q

How are erythrocytosis (RBC)specialised for their function?

A

Biconcave shape increases surface area to volume ratio.
Flexible, so can squeeze through narrow blood capillaries.
around body and do not have a nucleus, increasing space inside cells for haemoglobin

Q

How are leucocytes specialised for their functions?

A

Part of bodies, immune system, lymphocytes.
Large nucleus
Involved in immunological memory.
Two types:
B cells can proliferate and differentiate
T cells Candistroy, infected cells and cancer cells.

Flexible and mobile can squeeze between cells in the capillary walls to migrate to areas of infection.
Several lobes in nucleus
Engulf + destroy pathogens use an enzymes

Q

How are thrombocytes (Platelets) specialised for its function?

A

Small
Colourless soul fragments in blood.
control blood clotting critical for healing wounds.
Normal countPlatelet count is 150,000–450,000 platelets per microlitre.

Q

How are neurons specialise for their function?

A

Information travels along neurons as electrical signals, cord nerve impulses
Consist of large cell bodies (a soma) with small projections (dendrites) and an axon
