Q

SR’s belief about the nature of humans

A

the human being cannot be REDUCED to libido or will to power

wants to start from the concrete individual being of the human being

there is NOT a human nature…we are free, make our own choices to become self

everyone’s project is deeply individual

smth irreducible

A

our heredity, education, and environ are all reducible…don’t adequately explain a person’s behav or personality

SR looking for smth genuinely irreducible, whose irreducibility is evident for us
- ID what’s individual abt the individ
- the personality of the individ can be understood thru the FUNDAMENTAL PROJ/og choice…the choice/attitude that unifies our project and projected self

Q

does our facticity matter

A

our environ does impact us, but doesn’t solely define us

we must take responsibility for ourselves and our freedom, even if our facticity influences who we become

bad faith to deny ourselves and our choices

Q

desire

A

represents a LACK OF BEING
- this distinguishes being-for-itself from being-in-itself

BFI is complete in-itself and has no desire…objects
BII is INCOMPLETE, desires completion…being of subjects

we want to have in-itself’s consciousness, but the completeness of for-itself structures
- don’t feel anguish when complete, but don’t want to be objects
- want completion with consciousness
