Statistical testing/Sign Test Flashcards

1
Q

Significance

A

If the difference between two sets of data is greater than what would occur by chance, it is a significant result. To find out if the difference is significant a statistical test is needed

Q

Probability

A

Probability is the liklihood a certain event will happen if the null hypothesis were true. Generally accepted level of Probability in psychology is 0.05 (5% Significance level). Different significance levels used for different experiments.

Q

Critical value

A

The value that the S value is compared with to see whether the alternate or the null hypothesis is accepted. Critical value must be great than or equal to S-Value for the alternate hypothesis to be accepted

A

The Sign test is used to analyse the difference in scores between related items, to decide whether the alternate or null hypothesis is accepted

Q

3 things needed to know to find the critical value

A
  1. Significance level
2.The number of participants in the investigation or the degrees of freedom
  2. Whether the hypothesis is directional (used a one-tailed test) or non-directional (used a two-tailed test)
