Stem Cells
undifferentiated cells with the capability of differentiating into specialised cells
Two types of stem cells
Embryonic and adult
Embryonic stem cells
develop after a sperm and egg from zygote cell
Totipotent
no specialisation
Pluripotent
very little specialisation
Multipotent
semi specialisation
Adult stem cells
found in our bone marrow and become specialised blood cells that help our immune system
What happens if we don’t have stem cells?
wounds would never heal, your skin and blood could not continually renew themselves
Types of multipotent cells
Ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm
Ectoderm
neurons, skin cells
Mesoderm
skeletal muscles, red blood cells
Endoderm
stomach cells, liver cells
