Importance of torr quarry
Torr Quarry is one of eight limestone quarries located on the Mendip Hills in Somerset. It is a nationally important source of construction materials, contributing over £15 million to the local economy each year and providing jobs for more than 100 people.
What is being done for sustainability at torr quarry
To improve environmental sustainability, the quarry is being restored to create wildlife lakes for recreation and water supply. Currently, 200 acres of the site have already been landscaped with grass and trees to help the area blend in with the surrounding countryside.
Sustainability is further managed through the regular monitoring of noise, vibrations, and dust emissions. To reduce the impact on local roads and villages, three-quarters of the quarry’s output is transported by rail, primarily to the south-east of England.
Future plans for torr quarry
In 2010, plans were made to deepen the quarry to extend operations until 2040. Deepening the site is considered more sustainable than extending it outwards, as it has a lower impact on the surrounding natural environment.
