Q

Augmented feedback

A

Added or enhanced task-intrinsic feedback
Extrinsic

someone giving you more information about your performance that you cant see

Q

how does augmented feedback enhanve motor learning

A

facilitates achievement of action goal
motivates learner to continue with learner
augmented feedback is also a performance variable

8
Q

when is augmented feedback essential

A
  • Skill performance does not produce critical sensory feedback
  • Injury/disease has removed sensory information
  • Performer cannot use critical task-intrinsic feedback appropriately* (can be overcome)

9
Q

when is augmented feedback not essential

A

Performance provides sufficient task-intrinsic feedback
Sometimes, augmented feedback is redundant and does not enhance learning

Q

augmented feedback can impair motor learning if

A
  • Task-intrinsic feedback is minimal or difficult to interpret. (can overcome)
  • Augmented feedback is erroneous
  • Concurrent augmented feedback*
  • Augmented feedback is provided too frequently*
    *=will be discussed further

Q

how do you know if concurrent feedback will enhance or impair motor learning

A
  1. informativeness: Task-intrinsic feedback is not informative and the augmented feedback is highly informative then concurrent augmented feedback will lead to a dependency on the augmented feedback
  2. If it facilitates the learning of the critical task-intrinsic feedback then concurrent feedback will enhance learning:
  • Negative learning effect if augmented feedback distracts attention from critical task-intrinsic feedback
  • Positive learning effect if augmented feedback directs attention to critical task-intrinsic feedback

Q

guidance hypothesis

A

Feedback after every trial may lead to a different type of learning (dependency)

Less frequent feedback encourages different learning strategies like active problem solving and does not create a dependency
