Engage time
The time you can see a student involved or engaged in a task
Allocated time
The amount of time given to a student for learning
Academic learning time
Refers to a set of instructional methods in which students work in small, mixed-ability learning teams
Instructional time
The time you can observe a teacher teaching
Be able to discuss what Wong means when he says, “tests tell you if the student needs corrective help,” and what it implies.
Criterion-referenced tests are supposed to be used as a diagnostic instrument. The implication for teachers is that they need to remediate or correct; if they don’t, the learning will get worse as the year progresses.
Describe the difference in criterion-referenced test and a norm-referenced test.
Criterion-referenced test requires that each question be written to a pre-stated criterion or objective-a percentage was used. Norm-referenced test is used to determine placement on a normal distribution curve.
List the parts of the scoring guide according to Wong.
Standards
Identify what is essential for students to master
Identify the three factors of writing an objective according to Wong.
List 3 tools Wong identifies to enhance student learning.
List the 4 steps to an effective assignment according to Wong.
Identify what is the purpose of a test and when should the test be written according to Wong.
Find out if the students have accomplished the objective of the assignment. The test must be written before the lesson begins, because the test will be used to assess the student learning.
Identify the major differences in protective behaviors, maintenance behaviors, and enhancement behaviors.
Protective-complain and rationalize to protect…avoidance of what is expected
Maintenance-spend time coping and hoping life will improve
Enhancement-true leaders and professionals…“we” people
Describe the difference in being assertive and aggressive as a teacher.
Assertiveness is a clear statement of the problem, but is not hostile. Insistence on appropriate behavior is present, but the teacher is not argumentative or inflexible.
List some tips for effective parent/teacher conferences as we discussed in class.
Be able to share 3-5 things you should never say to a parent.
Also, why you shouldn’t say it, and what you should say instead.
Be able to discuss what the research says is valuable about cooperative learning and be able to list 4-6 of its benefits.
We learn 95% of what we teach someone else.
Students reach higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy.
Discuss what Wong means by, “learning has nothing to do with what the teacher covers. Learning has to do with what the student accomplishes.” How does this relate to the 3 student domains of PDAS?
Wong means that it does not matter what is covered by the teacher, because true learning is determined by the student and what they accomplish. PDAS covers student participation, learner-centered instruction, and evaluation/feedback. These three domains relate because the proper implementation and use of these domains will result in greater student accomplishment and learning within the classroom. It is not just WHAT is taught, but rather HOW it is taught.
