Using Genome Projects Flashcards

(4 cards)

1
Q

What is the genome?
What is sequencing?

A

The entire genetic material of an organism in the nucleus of a cell (in eukaryotes)

Working out the DNA base sequence for all DNA in a cell
-many organisms have been sequenced (human genome project which took 13 years from 2003)

Q

Why is it easy to sequence prokaryotic cells?
Why is this useful?

A

Dont contain introns
-so genome can be used to directly sequence proteins that derive from genetic code (proteome) of organism

Can identify potential antigens to use a vaccine.

4
Q

Why is is difficult to sequence complex organisms?

A

Have introns (eukaryotes) and regulatory genes in DNA.
-not easily used to translate proteome
