Continuum of anesthetic state
general anesthesia
patient is unconsious.
*inhaled vapors and IV drugs
deep sedation
pt sleeps through surgery with little memory upon waking
supplemental oxygen often given
moderate sedation
patients feel drowsy and may sleep through procedure but awaken when spoken to or touched. Memory of procedure is minimal.
minimal sedation
patients feel relaxed but may be awake. Can answer questions and follow instructions. Will have memory.
regional anesthesia
injection near a cluster of nerves will numb the area that requires surgery. Pt stays awake.
local anesthesia
anasthetic drug is usually injected into the tissue to numb the specific location requiring minor surgery.
