Pathogen-Free (SPF) pigs

Generally good: If the sow is in labour for < 6-12 hours

Poor: If the sow is in labour > 12 hours

Describe the anaesthetia preparation?

Intravenous anaesthesia:

1. Light sedation to remove piglets
2. Deeper plane of anaesthesia for suturing

+ Local anaesthesia

Lumbosacral epidural anaesthesia

15-20ml 2% Lidocaine (Ø Epinephrine) for a 120-145kg sow may be given to

reduce movement of the hindlimbs

+ Local anaesthesia

1. Sedation & Premedication: 250kg sow → 12ml Azaperone IM
2. Induction: 250kg sow → 12.5ml Ketamine + 5ml Diazepam/Midazolam IV
3. Maintenance: Ø but a 2 litre IV NaCl infusion is given

Preparation

Positioning of the sow:

1. Right/left side lateral recumbency or
2. Dorsal recumbency with a ventral midline incision this involves less tissue &

vasculature than a recumbent position.

1. Catheterisation: Catheter inserted into the ear vein
2. Removal of hair using a no. 10 clipper head
3. Cleaning the surgical site: Scrub with a nylon brush + iodophor

Scrub → Spray with disinfectant

4. If using field/nerve block anaesthesia, infuse the area
