Indications for caesarian section?
Indications
Relative and/or absolute large foetus
Emphysematous foetus → The dam is usually hypotensive & toxic Foetal monsters
Laceration of the vaginal canal → ↓ Birth canal diameter
Disturbed uterine contraction → Deep-sided sows & cold condition Specific
Pathogen-Free (SPF) pigs
Prognosis of Cs?
Prognosis
Generally good: If the sow is in labour for < 6-12 hours
Poor: If the sow is in labour > 12 hours
Describe the anaesthetia preparation?
Intravenous anaesthesia:
+ Local anaesthesia
Lumbosacral epidural anaesthesia
15-20ml 2% Lidocaine (Ø Epinephrine) for a 120-145kg sow may be given to
reduce movement of the hindlimbs
+ Local anaesthesia
Describe the preparation?
Preparation
Positioning of the sow:
vasculature than a recumbent position.
Scrub → Spray with disinfectant
