Vasectomy surgical technique?

Surgical technique

• Pull the scrotum back between the rear legs
• Force the testicles to the bottom of the scrotum
• Make a 5-8cm incision over the spermatic cord between the testicle and the inguinal ring
• Isolate and exteriorize the spermatic cord
• Identify the vas deference within the spermatic cord by palpation and visual inspection
• Stabilize the vas deferens within the spermatic cord, and make a 1cm incision through the vaginal tunic to

expose the vas deferens

• Isolate about 3cm of the vas deferens
• Place two ligatures 3cm apart on the exposed vas deferens
• Remove the section of the vas deferens between the 2 ligatures
• Replace the ends into the spermatic cord
• Close the spermatic cord with one suture of absorbable material or may be replaced without suturing
• The skin incision in closed in 2 layers

o SC layer with simple continuous of absorbable

o Skin with multiple patterns of non-absorbable

• Repeat the procedure on the opposite vas deferens

o Some surgeons prefer to remove the opposite testicle

• Skin incision in the scrotum over the tail of the epididymis
• Carefully open the vaginal tunic with scalpel or scissors to expose the epididymis
• Take care to avoid incising the epididymis or testicle
• Bluntly dissect the tail of the epididymis from the testicle
• Transect and remove the tail of the epididymis
• Suture the skin
• Allow drainage of the incision
• Repeat the procedure on the opposite side

o Some surgeons prefer to remove the opposite testicle
