Q

Wat are eustatic sea level changes

A
  • changes to the absolute sea level. The total volume of water and the total change in where and how water is stored

Q

what happeneds to the sea levels if an increase int eh volume of freah water flowing into ocean.

A
  • increases the sea level as the salinity is lowered and casues sea levels to rise

Q

What are glacio -eustatic changes

A
  • Changes which occur due to the melting ice caps and the rise in the sea level as it releases water back into the sea

Q

what is hydro-isostacy

A

Hydro-isostasy is the vertical movement of the Earth’s crust caused by the loading or unloading of water. As the ice caps melt the weight of the water compresses the earth crust diminishing the sea level rise

7
Q

What can upset the isostatic balance

A
  • the melting of ice caps increasing the weight of the water therfore putting more weight on the plates.

Q

What will happned to counter act the isostatic inbalence

A
  • Parts of the asthenosphere will float away , cuasing and isostatic depression and the land level to fall

Q

What happends in an isostatic depression

A
  • The land level will fall. But this is compensated with a lanf ldevel rise in another area

11
Q

What is a glacio-Isostatic subsidence

A
  • Occoured in when the crust was depressed by ice sheets. During glacial periods ocean water volumes and global sea levels are very low. The glacial continents are regionally depressed by the weight of the glaciers so there relative sea level is higher than continents that did not experience glaciers.

15
Q

What is Glacio-isostasy

A

Vertical movement of the land

Caused by ice loading

Ice sheets press the land down

When ice melts → land rebounds

16
Q

what is Hydro-isostasy

A

Caused by water loading

Rising sea levels add weight to ocean basins

Ocean crust subsides slightly

Can cause nearby land to uplift

17
Q

What is a raised beach

A

A raised beach is a former shoreline left above present sea level due to relative sea-level fall, often caused by isostatic uplift.

18
Q

What does a contor line map show

A
  • Areas of equal hight
19
Q

What does an isoline map show you

A
  • A point of equal value (temperature, pressure, etc)
20
Q

key term for the fall of sea level

A
  • marine regression
21
Q

What is the key word for rise in sea level

A
  • Marine transgression
22
Q

Name a landform of eustatic sea level change

23
Q

Landform of marine regression

A

-Raised beach
