What to use to mark out wood
a pencil
5 different machining processes
-milling/routing
-drilling
-turning
-stamping
What does milling do
makes small holes or channels in wood or metal
What kind of process is milling
is a slower process than routing but can be linked to CNC manufacture
What do routing machines do
make slots and holes in wood and can be done with a manual plunge router or CNC router
What kind of process is drilling
-a rotating drill bit drills into static material such as wood, metal or polymer
-the drill produces holes for items such as dowels ,screws and fittings
What does Turning use
Turning uses a lathe and can be used for metal or wood and can also be an CNC process
What happens in Turning
-the material is rotated
- a cutting tool is pressed against the material surace to remove excess material and make the required shape
What is turning used to make
products such as table legs, bowls, chess pieces, doorknobs and handles
What does stamping do
sheet material is removed using a CNC stamping procedure which stamps the material shape out of the sheet
How is the material removed in stamping
the shearing action of the upper tool (die) and lower tool (die) removes the material
What is stamping used for
usually used for smaller production runs of sheet metal from 0.5 to 6mm thick

What is used for laminating wood
wood veneers or thin manufactured boards such as 3mm plywood
Features of laminating wood
-bonds material together using adhesive and pressure
-wood has adhesive applied then is bent over a former and when dry they form a thicker board in the shape of the former
-wood held over the former whilst drying by clamps or a vacuum bag
products from laminating wood
furniture items such as chairs ,chair backs, tables, bent table legs, stair bannisters, curved cupboard fronts
