What is information processing the name for?
The process that a performer goes through when they make and act on decisions
How many steps are there to information processing?
4
What is the 1st stage of information processing?
Explain it
Input
This is the data received from their senses.
A performer will have to select which information to focus on as their senses will be giving them a lot of data.
What is the 2nd stage of information processing?
Decision-Making
The selected data is analysed.
An appropriate response is selected.
The performer may access old memories of similar occassions for guidance on which response to choose.
What is the 3rd stage of information processing?
Output
The decison is acted on. Information is sent from the performers brain to the working muscles to carry out the required response.
What is the 4th stage of information processing?
Feedback
Data is received in response to the output.
It can be received intrinsically or extrinsically.
What is short term memory?
Temporary storage in the brain. Like a recycling bin on a commputer. It is stored there for a short amount of time before being deleted or restored. 7 bits of data can be stored and lasts up to 60 seconds. If the information is rehearsed, it is ‘restored’ and put in long term memory. If not it is ‘deleted’.
What is long term memory?
A store of well-learned past experiences. It has unlimited capacity and can hold information for long periods of time. Experienced performers have more info here than begginers as they have had opportunity to rehearse it.
What is intrinsic feedback?
Feedback received from the performer themselves, from their thoughts or emotions, or it can be kinaesthetic; this is recieved by receptors in the muscles.
What is extrinsic feedback?
Feeback received from outside the performer. it can come from many sources like coaches, spectators or video replays.
