Q

What occurs when someone has cancer and how does cancer destroy the body?

A

Cancer involve cells making more of themselves rapidly this causes the formation of tumors (which do not serve a purpose to the body and instead harm it by taking away nutrients from other cells eventually to the point where these cells can die and the body is destroyed)

Q

What are mammograms

A

weak x-rays used to examine breast tissue in order to try to detect breast cancer
no agreement on the exact age in which individuals should start having mammograms however the earlier breast cancer is detected the better the chance of survival.

Q

Describe the risk factors for breast cancer

A

If you had a mother who had breast cancer- suggests that you could carry BRAC1 or BRRAC2 gene
If you are over the age of 30 and especially if you are at the age of 40 (95% of new breast cancer cases are detected at age 40)

Q

What are the general reccomendations for mammograms

A

Individuals are generally reccomended to start undergoing them at age 30. Individuals whose mother had breast cancer or who are confirmed to have the BRAC1 or BRRAC2 gene are recommended to get one a year after they pass the age of 40, from the age of 50-69 individuals are reccomended to get one every 2 years and then for individuals 70 and up it is up to them and their doctors to determine how often they should get mammograms
3 bad things happen in 3s good to start checking once you reach the 3s, standard family 4 people if there is the gene from mother (key figurein nuclear familY) then it is recomended that you get one every year (happens as much as birthday from which came from mom)
50-69, (5 lucky number for me 69 fun number fun as in can decrease to getting one once every 2 years) 7 heaven - might not have to worry about it anymore up to individual and doc to decide fi they should keep getting mammograms

Q

What is the climacteric period?

A

clima - like climax associated with sex (climaxing) - sex- reporductive organs and teric like tear so torn from climax going back down - refers to the decreases related to reporductive organs that come with age
for women
so the climax to when you can be a matriarch (mother has) occured and it is starting to tear end- climateric refers to the period where a womens fertility is coming to an end
generally starts at 45 (4 old lucky # 5 current one I kind of have been in this state bc im lowkey infertile and was when 4 was my fav number) and can last 15 to 20 years
usually by 47-48 women start to experience occurances of menestration that are both irregular and decreased for a duration of two years. Notably this can begin as early as 40 or as late as 60

Q

What is menopause considered as and when on average does menopause occur

A

Menopause is considered to have occured when an entire year without a period has passed
menopause generally occurs in a womans 40s-50s. (me range - I have not had my period in a year)
Women who have gone through menopause can still get preganant if eggs are implanted in them (makes sense as its that they no longer drop their own eggs - how would this egg be dropped or is it implanted into the cervix?)

17
Q

What is perimenopause

A

Can occur ten years before menopause (which is defined as when a woman has gone one year without a period) and involves women’s levels of estrogen and progesterone decreasing
This can lead to women experiencing surges of heat above their waists (hot falshes)

18
Q

What are some of the physical symptoms that accompany perimenopause and menopause

A

hot flashes, body aches headaches, dizzyness and heart palpitations are all reported to occur frequently during menopause
50% of women experience hot flashes ( you pms like a chick trust me I would know - hot and cold chicks in theory are 50% of the pop - 50% of chicks experience hot flashes during menopause)
10% of women report being in severe distress during menopause

19
Q

What can influence women’s experiences of menopause and perimenopause

A

their perspective on menopause going into it. If they see menopause as just another stage of life and are less quick to attribute physical symptoms and mood swings to it then they will be less likely to have a less bad psychological experience of menopause compared with women who believe that it will be challenging going into it and who are more likely to attribute physical symptoms and mood swings to it

20
Q

Describe the climacteric period for men

A

Climacteric clima like climax (climaxing associated with sex which is associated with reproductive organs and climax is like the peak of something) teric like tear down- begging to tear down reprodcutive organs capabilities - refers to the period in which capabilities related to reproductive organs physically decrease and also includes psychological changes (potentially brought on by physiological changes - ie changes in the levels of hormones)
Decreases in the ammount of sperm however men throughout middle adult years can still father children
10 % of men experience enlarging of the prostate gland at the age of 40 and 50% of men experience enlarging of the prostate gland by the age of 80 (40 is half of 80 when this change is first mentioned - half bc half of men at 80 experience this change) . The prostate gland is walnut sized, is in front of the rectum and between the bladder and the penis. The urethra goes through the prostate gland and takes urine from the bladder through the prostate gland to the penis.
The prostate gland also creates the fluid that nourishes and protects sperm which is then pushed out of it and into the urethra as semen when ejaculation occurs.
The enlarging of the prostate gland results in difficulty urinating as well as more frequent urination occuring at night
pro state if are pro state you are standing in front of the rectum of a walnut size of pop that makes decisions surrounded by dicks and pissbabie s(wlnut sized gland in front of the rectum and inbetween the penis and the bladder)

21
Q

What occurs with trends with erectile dysfunction

A

The rates of erectile dysfunction tend to increase with age can be treated using drugs like viagra and testesterone patches

22
Q

What occurs to the weekly rates in which couples in the age range of 45-59 have sex

A

50% of couples aged 45-59 reported having sex once a week or more (so the other 50% it is less then once a week) 45 me state sexless from another half and 10 away from 69 makes sense sexless
1/2 of couples within the age range of 45-59 have sex more then once a week
reasons for this can include family responsibilities, vareer responsibilities, less energy and physical
in men can take longer to achieve an erection and return to one after orgasaming - rates of sexual dysfunction also increase. Additionally the ammount of testosterone produced and fluid ejaculated lessens
in women the vaginal walls thin and become less elastic which can result in a decreased interest in sex, drugs, topical creams, testosterone patches can be used to help prevent the vaginal walls from thinning.

23
Q

What are common sexual challenges can impact adults in the age range of 40-80 and what are the rates in which these occur

A

22% of men report experiencing premature ejaculation and 26% (wehave 22 and 33, 21 which = 3 and 26 (making it the 3rd 2 we have and 2x3 =6 which is the ones) of men experience erectile challenges
21% of women report lubrication issues and 33% of women report being disinterested with sex

24
Q

What is a predictor of sexual activity

A

health level the higher health levels associated with greater levels of sexual activity

25
What do cross sectional studies find about intelligence
cross sectional c like cohort this is the one where you can get cohort effects (ie comparing the iq test scores of individuals who are 40 in 2025 and individuals who are 80 in 2025 to try to determine the impact age had on iq would be a cross sectional approach) cohort effects refer to when a factor that impacted that specific generation rather then their age itself impacts results for iq tests this could include how the importance placed on education has increased throughout generations - this explains why cross sectional approaches suggest that there are significant declines in intelligence caused by age (as the difference being measured is actually the ammount of time the individual likley spent on these skills due to how important they were considered during their period of education)
26
What do longitudinal studies on intelligence find
Longitudinal like stay in for long haul (ie have same participatns and measure their iq every 10 years - this would be being in it for the long haul) Find a less significant decrease in intelligence findings partially be skewed by the practice effect (refers to how people improve at something they have had repeated exposure to) so since the older somone is in a longitudinal study the more practice they have had with iq tests and therefore the greater the potential boost they have from that when you stay with someone long enough find all sorts of odd things but shouldn't doubt that they are the one bc this is normal odds not 1 = 3 and 5 longitudinal studies of intelligence have foudn that intelligence did not start decreaseing and kept increasing in some areas until after 30 and could take as long as until after 50 to do so
27
What do most people at 40 think regarding their intelligence
420 makes you more absent minded people at 40 report feeling more absent minded then they did 20 years ago and having more concerns related to their intelligence
28
What is cognitive mechanics
paul baltus (bal - vas deference - fluid, fluid intelligence) cognitive mechanics/fluid intelligence includes vasd cc (as in vast c bc snsory info is vast beyond sight) involves the ability to process and speed in which visual and motor memory sensory input attention discrimination comparison categorization is processed is hereditary more likely to decrease with age (fluid just like how ammount of fluid vas d man decreses with age) vasd c
29
Cogntive pragmatics
crystalized intelligence pragmatic means realistic - if your realistic you have crystal clear view of whats occuring of course this view will be impacted by the society you are in bc this will influence the occurances around you - includes socially programmed skills ie reading, writing, educational qualifications, language understanding, professional abilities, life skills and knoweldge about ourselves are associated with our abilities to cope with and control our lives (bc would count as our abilities to master the abilities that society wants us to have which impact our lives) makes sense sensory processing occurs for all humans whereas education can vary depending on culture fluid can fit into anything (fits for all humans) crystals do not fit for specific social molds - makes sense fluid/cognitve mechanics arenot socially programmed whereas crystalized/cognitive pragmatics are since cognitive pragmatics are taught they can be improved throughout life with as more learning occurs or more focus on them occurs (opp of what would be expected assume a crystalized ability is solid and unchanging and fluid can improve but is not how it works)
30
What did Baltes assert occurs as we age
Bal like a ball will be selected based on its ability to roll so it must optimize this - selective optimization refers to how individuals compensate for deficits in certain skills by focusing on improving our capacities in others (this means that during againg some skills increse (the ones that are selectively optimized) and some decrease- the ones that are likely fluid intelligence based that the skills being selectively optimized are trying to compensate for)
31
What was found to be the difference between experts and non-experts in how they tackle their subjects
experts more likely to follow intuition and bend rules - makes sense they likely have more experience with following these rules as well as more opportunity to break them therfore know what situations they work the best in and the ones they dont so they will be less rigid in following the rules and therefore more flexible in their approach whereas beginniers have less experience likely less confient with how to do it in general bc of lack of experience so stick to rules more strictly. Experts more likely to process solutions more automatically also more likely to have better skills for problem solving. although experts know how to do things better usually they have a tougher time explaining how they knew to come to the conclusion (likely bc subconcious memories of other experiences that come in the form of intuition - makes sense like with reading comp it is harder to explain why your own intuition is guided towards something bc comes from the entirety rather then a specific guideline- same idea)
32
Describe the Simon and Chase experiment
the chase - if an expert in it can provide meaning to more of what moves in the "game" of it might occur however if the moves appear random then you might not be able to provide mening from emory - same idea but with chess chase and simon had 25 chess pieces on a board 2 conditions condition one 25 peices were placed in positions possible during a game found experts could remember 16 positions, intermediates could remember 8 and beginners could remember 4 (memory would likely depend on how well they chunk together pieces positions into a specific relationship- maybe strategy that they had encountered before which would be contingent on experience) condition 2 had pieces placed in postiions that were not possible during a game found memory was the same among all 3 levels (likely bc backgnournd experience was the same with all 3 for this conditon)
33
What does baltes assert wisedom to be and what factors can increase wisedom
wisedom associated with pragmatic life intelligence and the conditon of being human refers to the ability to process ones own experiences and relate and connect to others according to baltes creativity and generativity increase the liklihood of wisedom (these two factors not necessiarly associated w/ cognitive intelligence) - likely bc allow individuals to percieve things in more different ways which can lead them to potentially be more flexible in perspective and able to relate to more people can increase with age (as you are more likely to have more of what it really depends on: life experience) having life experiences ie a profession that deals with challenging issues can increase the likelihood that someone will develop wisedom empathy and caring about others also increases the likelihood of wisedom (this makese logical sense as these traits would motivate people to be more likely to want to connect with others nd therefore try to do so) according to baltes only a few people reach wisedom/it is rare wisedom extends beyond intelligence
34
Describe the study that compared wisedom between older adults and college students
cer - wisedom like how much of cer you are how many different perspectives you can understnad cognitive - measured the degree to which an understanding of ambiguity and uncertainity in situations was absent effective - measured compassion and caring for others (affect in psychopathy refered to caring for others) reflective - measured how likely individuals were to take different perspectives on a situation as well as degree of absense of self awareness and self evalution ie on a likert scale (like like for x rt for y except liert scale gives more options can say if you are in the middle of x/y / rank the degree to which you agree with one rather then only haveing one or the other option) would rate how much you agree with the statement things often go wrong for me even though it is not my fault found that college educated older adults scored higher on the effective and reflective but not cognitive domains then college aged students
35
What is found with changes of brain mass related to again
between the age of 20-19 the brains mass decreases by 5-10% - this occurs in key brain structures including the frontal lobes and the hippocampus unhealthy involves loss of neurotransmitters cholinergib (like mr cholins might have altzheimers bc he is such a weirdo- would be one explanation for why he was the way he was- close to miss bennet and her nerves cholinergic is a neuron whose loss is associated with alzheimers glutaminergic (gluta mine asking about gluta (glutus maximus bc I didn't know that was apart of the body for a while) would be a bad way to test the brain thats mine for althzheimers bc wasnt something I knew) glutaminergic another neuron whose loss is associated with alzheimers and memory decline 9glutaminergic cant remember something if you didn't know it in the first place) in healthy changes to brain mass the reduction in volume mostly occurs due to shrinking of neurons and eleminations of axons and synapses most of the loss occurs in the prefrontal cortex which might explain the decrease in workign memory that accompanies aging
36
What neurotransmitters decrease in healthy aging brains
GAD gad abilities will decrease with age bc are largely physical neurotransmitters that decrease with age include GABA, acetylcholine and dopamine decrease in acetylcholine (like allowed you to ace memory) associted with slight declines in memory decrease in dopamine can create challenges with planning and motor activity (dope weed can slow /make motor activity less accurate and def hard to plan when your high like how decreases in dopamine ironic decreases in dope would do the opposite since dope makes motor contorl and planning more difficult - make motor contorl and planning more difficult
37
What occurs in terms of memory loss from 40-60
Usually people don't experience much memory loss at 40-60 although they will say they are more absent minded then they were 20 years ago, in reality they are likely largely as absent minded as they have always been however they now attribute it to age whereas when younger might attribute it to sleep/being hungover, 30s might be due to sleep related to kids, and then at 40s-60s now believe it happens from age
38
schemas
like scheme - would follow specific procedure - our general expected procedures for situations that allow us to experience situaitons that are new while carrying our expectations from past related ones so we do not act as if the situation is completely new.
