2
Q

What happens in the 1st stage of the cell cycle?

A

The growth of the cell, duplicating of chromosomes and increase in number of sub cellular structures (mitochondria and ribosomes)

Q

What is mitosis?

A

Mitosis is when the chromosomes are split into two and go to opposing ends of the nucleus. The nucleus then splits into two.

Q

How do the chromosomes go to each side of the nucleus in mitosis?

A

The chromosomes line up in the centre of the nucleus and the cell fibres pull them apart leaving the two arms of each chromosome to go to opposite ends of the nucleus.

16
Q

What percentage of the cell cycle is mitosis?

17
Q

What is therapeutic cloning?

A

When a patient’s cells are used to create an early embryo clone of themselves- this can be used to treat the patient’s medical conditions

18
Q

What is cell division by mitosis?

A

Body cells divide to form two identical daughter cells.

19
Q

Give advantages of embryonic stem cells against adult stem cells.

A

Easier to obtain (spares from fertility clinics) and can differentiate into any cell type meaning better for treating more diseases.

20
Q

Give advantages of adult stem cells against embryonic stem cells.

A

Fewer ethical issues obtained from the usage of them (loss of potential life when using embryonic stem cells)

21
Q

Give disadvantages of adult stem cells.

A

Can take a long time for a suitable donor to be found (differing blood types) and can’t be used to treat as many diseases as embryonic
