10
Q

Why do the alkali metals get more reactive the further you go down?

A

The further you go down, the more shells you gain the easier it is for the element to lose its outer electron.

12
Q

Why are the halogens more reactive at the top?

A

Due to it being easier to gain an electron due to being closer to the nucleus.

15
Q

What is a displacement reaction?

A

It is a reaction in which a more reactive element reacts with another less reactive element’s compound and displaces the other.
(AB + C > AC + B)

17
Q

What is oxidation?

A

It is the chemical reaction in which an element loses electrons.

18
Q

What is reduction?

A

Is is the chemical reaction in which an element gains electrons.

19
Q

What is a spectator element?

A

It is an element in ionic equations that doesn’t change at all and stays exactly the same before the reaction as after. It isn’t shown in the ionic equation (is left out)

20
Q

In period 3 and so on of the periodic table, what is the max number of outer electrons?

21
Q

Who created our modern periodic table?

A

Dmitri Mendeleev

22
Q

How did Mendeleev order the periodic table?

A

based off atomic mass (across) and similar chemical reactions (down)

23
Q

Why did Mendeleev leave holes in the periodic table?

A

Because there were undiscovered elements at the time that he some how knew about and predicted their presence

24
Q

What is the main difference between the modern periodic table and Mendeleev’s periodic table?

A

The modern periodic table is sorted by atomic number whereas mendeleev’s table was sorted by atomic mass.

25
What is the only transition metal that isn’t solid?
Mercury (liquid)
26
What properties do the halogens have?
They are colourful, non metal and are less reactive the lower you go down
27
What is a redox reaction?
It is a reaction that electrons are gained (reduction) or when electrons are lost (oxidation)
28
What colour is chlorine in water?
Pale green
29
What colour is bromine in water?
Orange
30
What colour is iodine in water?
Brown
31
What colour is chlorine in cyclohexane?
Pale green
32
What colour is bromine in cyclohexane?
Brown
33
What colour is iodine in cyclohexane?
Violet
34
What are properties of alkali metals?
Low density, low boiling point, very reactive, good conductors of electricity, quick to tarnish
35
What are the properties of the transition metals?
High density, high boiling point, not very reactive, shiny, metallic, good conductors of electricity and heat
36
What is the no. of electrons in the outer shell of the halogens?
7
37
What is the ionic charge of the halogens?
-1
38
What does atomic mass tell us?
The mass of the atom (protons and neutrons)
39
What does the atomic number tell us?
The number of protons
40
How did Johann Wolfgang organise elements?
He put them into triads based off of their atomic mass.
