Bile
Composed of bile salts( bile acids conjugated to glycine or taurine, making them water soluble), phospholipid, cholesterol, bilirubin, water and ions.
Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase catalyzes RLS.
Bile function
Digestion, absorption of lipid and fat soluble vitamins Cholesterol excretion (body's only mean of eliminating cholesterol) Antimitochondrial activity (via membrane disruption)
Bilirubin
Product of heme metabolism:
Bilirubin is removed from blood by liver, conjugated with glucuronate and excreted in bile
Direct: conjugated and water soluble
Indirect: unconjugated and water insoluble
Urobiligen
In urine, gives its color.
Urobilinogen
Excreted in feces as stercobilin,
gives its characteristic color of stool.
