  • Choose an appropriate source of fresh water.
  • Pass the water through filter beds (made out of sand and gravel).
  • Sterilising (using chlorine, ozone, UV light).

A
  • In the UK, rainwater provides low levels of dissolved substances (freshwater).
  • This collects in lakes and rivers in the ground.

How do we get portable water from seawater?

A
  • If supplies of freshwater is limited, desalinisation of salty water may be needed.

A
  • Can be done by distillation or processes that use membranes such as reverse osmosis.
  • These process require large amounts of energy.
