Q

cellular respiration breathing

A
  • inhaled oxygen is consumed in cellular respiration
  • co2, produced as a by-product, is then exhaled

Q

aerobic vs anaerobic respiration

A
  • aerobic: uses oxygen to produce a large amount of energy
  • anaerobic: doesnt use oxygen, produces less atp but does it quickly

Q

glycolysis

A
  • occurs in cytosol
  • enzymes break glycose into 2 pyruvate molecules
  • some atp is invested to redistribute chemical bonds
  • yields 2 ATP molecules and 2 electron carrying NADH molecules
  • NO OXYGEN NEEDED

Yields: 2 pyruvate, 2 ATP, 2 NADH

6
Q

krebs cycle

A
  • pyruvate (3 carbon) moves into mitochondira
  • pyrvuate is oxidized into Acetyl Co-A (2 carbon)
  • Produces ATP & electron carriers
  • Acetyl Co-A combines w/ a 4 carbon molecule, making citrate
  • Citrate is rearranged+oxidized, making 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, and 1 ATP per turn
  • og 4 carbon molecule is re-created, cycle restarts

TOTAL (w/ glycolysis): 4 ATP, 8 NADH, 2 FADH2

Q

etc

A
  • NADH & FADH2 deliver electrons to inner mitochondrial membrane
  • H+ drawn across membrane by electrons flowing across transport chain
  • H+ move into intermembrane compartment
  • As protons accumulate in the intermembrane compartment, proton gradient causes net. flow back across membrane into matrix
  • Flow of H+ down gradient powers ATP formation as it moves through ATP synthase
  • Electron transport phosphorylation requires O2
  • O2 takes spent electrons from electron transport system, combines w/ H+ to form H2O

Q

carbon cycles in ecosystems

A
  • photosynthesis removes carbon from the atmosphere and fixes it into biomass
  • respiration and combustion release carbon into the atmosphere as co2
