• the columnar epithelium of the endocervix extends out to the ectocervix
• the lining of the endocervix becomes visible on speculum examination

also called erosion

What is the main presentation of ectropion?

postcoital bleeding

• the columnar epithelial cells are more fragile
• they are more likely to bleed with sexual intercourse

In which group of people is ectropion more common?

• it is associated with higher oestrogen levels
• it is more common in younger women, pregnancy and COCP use

What is the transformation zone?

• the border between the columnar epithelium of the endocervix
• and the stratified squamous epithelium of the ectocervix

in ectropion, this becomes visible on speculum examination

What is the most common presentation of ectropion?

asymptomatic

• most are found incidentally during speculum examination for other reasons (usually smear tests)

What symptoms may ectropion present with?

• increased vaginal discharge
• vaginal bleeding (particularly PCB)
• dyspareunia

What is the treatment for asymptomatic ectropion?

Answer 7

• there is no treatment
• it will resolve as the patient gets older, stops the pill or is no longer pregnant

ectropion is NOT a contraindication for the COCP
