after a participant is done, the researcher should:
- explain any information that was withheld
- explain any deception
- check the participants physical and psychological state, make sure they are conftorable and provide access to additional resources if needed
- offer to explain the purpose of the study, and possible participal benefits
Institutional Review Board.
- According to HHS regulations, every institution that receives federal fonding must have an IRB in order to do research
- if you want to conduct research at a college university, you submit a proposed to your colleges, IRB
- make sure its ethical, systematic, and for the purpose of new knowledge
Risks to subjects
- physical harm
- stress
- loss of privacy
Institutional Review Board reviewing
- Exempt review of minaml risk research is for studies where there is no risk to the participants
- Expedited review of minimal risk research is for studies where the risks of harm are no greater than in daily life or routine tests
- Limited review of minimal risk research is for studies where the risks of harm are same as above, but sensitive identifying data must be collected
Full review of greater than minimal risk research is for anything other than above
Research with Nonhuman Animal Subjects
- only a minority of psychology research and on the decline
- animal rights groups tend to protest, but the vast majority of animal research is not painful to the animal and many important discoveries would be impossible without it
- There are strict ethical guidelines in place for the treatment of animals used in research
Ethics and Misrepresentation
- Fraud= fabrication of data
- faking data is rare, but very serious
- Plagirism= misrepresenting another’s work as your own
- word- for word plagirism= copying a segment of text into your own paper without citing the source
- paraphrasing plagirism= copying ideas from another’s work while using your own words, without citing the source
