four major types of tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Neural
apical surface
is the side of the tissue that’s toward the body surface
Basal Surface
is in the direction of what’s underneath
Basement membrane
Network of protein fibers (not cells!) that connects the epithelium to what’s underneath.
Provides strength and resists distortion. Also is a barrier to keep proteins and other large molecules from seeping from the connective tissue into the epithelium.
importance of epithelial tissue
like a cell protects what is underneath controls what goes in and out provides sensation gland secretions
glands
job is to synthesize (make) and secrete something in a fluid
can be one cell or an entire organ
