Q

Define construcive communication?

A

John Gottman – research in America
Levelling and editing – find common ground and not going overboard, but simple
Validating point of view — see where they’re coming from, rather than fully agreeing
Complaints (“I” language) —
Volatile dialogue – does not mean aggressive or abusive, but getting upset and arguing
Study—Found that couples who do not argue early on find that they are dissatisfied in the long term

Q

What are somedestructive communication patterns?

A
  • Criticism (vs. complaint) — a complaint, but also a blame on the partner (add poor body language)
  • Contempt —
  • Defensiveness – no move for a movement, flexibility is key, and both are on broad
  • Stonewalling — refusing to talk about the subject (ignoring you)
  • Belligerent — saying the complaint and the panther is aggressive in language
