Mechanism of Action
A
Inhibits ADP receptors on platelets and prolongs bleeding time by irreversibly inhibiting platelet aggregation.

A
- Reduce risk of CVA/MI
- Reducing thrombolytic events post- CVA/MI
- Prevent DVT
- Prevent thrombi formation unstable angina/coronary stents

A
Active bleeding

Precautions
A
- High risk of bleeding (incl. those with peptic ulcer disease)
- Severe hepatic disease – may impair the ability of the liver to convert the drug to its active metabolite.

A
- Assess current use of anticoagulants and NSAIDs
- Assess for increased bleeding risk
- Monitor for bleeding
- Evaluate unexpected fever/infection

Patient & Family Teaching
A
- Immediately report unusual bleeding
- Know it may take long to stop bleeding
- Do not stop taking drug
- Do not use NSAIDs, other OTC medications, or herbal supplements
- Inform dentist and other care providers prior to procedures.
