What is the collision theory
For a chemical reaction to happen:
Particles must collide
They must have enough energy (called activation energy)
If particles don’t collide or don’t have enough energy, nothing happens.
what increases the rate of reaction and frequency of collision?
Increasing the concentration of reactants in solution, the pressure of
reacting gases, and the surface area of solid reactants increases the
frequency of collisions and so increases the rate of reaction.
what happens if there is an Increase Concentration (in a solution)
More particles in the same space
Particles collide more often
👉 Rate of reaction increases
what happens if the pressure is higher
Gas particles are closer together
More collisions per second
👉 Rate of reaction increases
What happens if there is an of Increase Temperature
Particles move faster
More collisions, and more of them have enough energy
👉 Rate of reaction increases a lot
what happens if there is an increase of surface area e.g. using smaller solid pieces
More particles are exposed to react
More space for collisions to happen
👉 Rate of reaction increases
